We are delighted to announce that our Modern Apprentice, Logan Muir, has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to sustainability and community engagement, winning both the ‘Most Innovative Project’ and ‘Best Individual Presentation’ awards at the 2025 Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally
At Kelvin TOP-SET, our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our company ethos of ‘thinking globally and acting locally’. As providers of incident investigation training and services to leading global companies in high-risk industries, we understand that meaningful change happens when organisations take responsibility for their environmental impact both on a corporate level and within their local communities. Logan’s award-winning sustainability project perfectly embodies this principle, creating lasting value for our local environment while supporting educational initiatives that have the potential for far-reaching impact.
Sandy’s Big Adventure Quiz
Logan’s innovative sustainability project centred on developing a digital learning tool for the Irvine Clean Up Crew, a volunteer-led community group committed to enhancing the quality of life for everyone in the Irvine area through environmental clean-ups and educational outreach.
The digital quiz was designed to complement ‘Sandy’s Big Adventure’, a children’s story written by Jennifer and William Pless of the Irvine Clean Up Crew. The story follows Sandy the Seal and friends, who live among the sand at Irvine Beach, highlighting the harm that litter causes to wildlife both on land and in water.
Using Cognito Forms and developing custom CSS styling, Logan created an engaging, visually appealing quiz that works seamlessly across mobile and desktop devices. The quiz is aimed at primary school children aged 4-10 and serves as a valuable educational resource for school visits by the Irvine Clean Up Crew, helping young minds understand how litter dropped anywhere in Irvine can end up in waterways and eventually the sea.
The quiz is now permanently hosted on the Irvine Clean Up Crew’s website, providing a sustainable resource for continued environmental education.
Upstream Battle and Hands-On Experience
Logan’s community sustainability project went beyond digital development. As part of his challenge, he collaborated with Keep Scotland Beautiful and participated in their ‘Upstream Battle’ campaign, a national initiative focused on changing littering behaviours to prevent marine litter at source along Scotland’s rivers.
This hands-on experience included participating in litter picks at the Irvine Viaduct and riverbank areas, working alongside the Irvine Clean Up Crew volunteers and Keep Scotland Beautiful representatives. These activities gave Logan valuable insights into the real-world impact of littering and the immense community effort required to combat it.
The Power of Community Collaboration
Developing Tomorrow’s Talent
As part of our Modern Apprenticeship programme, Logan has shown exceptional initiative and skill development throughout this project. His work demonstrates how apprenticeships can foster innovation while providing meaningful contributions to community sustainability efforts. Scott Bowden, Partner – Business Support at Kelvin TOP-SET, noted: “We employed Logan straight from school after finishing his exams as a Modern Apprentice in Digital Applications Support. Logan became part of the team the minute he walked through the door and has continued to be a valued asset to the company”.
Sonn Breslin, Business Development Executive at QA Ltd, also recognised Logan’s achievements, highlighting that he has been nominated as a finalist in QA’s Apprenticeship Awards 2025 in the Rising Star category.
The Importance of Local Business Engagement
Logan’s sustainability project exemplifies why local business engagement in community initiatives is vital for sustainable development. By investing time, skills, and resources into local environmental groups like the Irvine Clean Up Crew, businesses can:
- create meaningful impact in their immediate communities;
- develop and showcase employee talent;
- build valuable community partnerships;
- support educational initiatives with long-term benefits;
- demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainability beyond corporate policies.
At Kelvin TOP-SET, our sustainability journey involves balancing business success with economic, social, and environmental stewardship. By supporting Logan’s innovative sustainability project and our ongoing collaboration with the Irvine Clean Up Crew, we’re proud to be making a tangible difference in our local community while contributing to global sustainability priorities.
Congratulations, Logan, on your well-deserved recognition – we look forward to seeing the continued impact of your innovative work!
