This week Rebecca Sharland joined us in our offices for her work experience placement. She was involved in many of the day to day tasks of running the business and was a great help to the team. Read on for a summary of what Rebecca got up to during her time with us:
Day 1: Rebecca started her week of work experience with an introduction to Kelvin TOP-SET where she learnt more about what the company does, the products and services offered and how the business works. She was then tasked with packing some marketing giveaways for an upcoming exhibition. After lunch, Rebecca helped Scott Bowden, IT Specialist, with his daily tasks including setting up some company phones.
Day 2: Today, Rebecca spent time in the morning with CEO Brian McConnell, learning more about the history of Kelvin TOP-SET. She then worked with Rowan Dyer-Wilson, Personnel and Learning Manager, on Health and Safety issues and shadowed Euan Dyer who explained his role within the company. In the afternoon, Rebecca assisted Liz Leitch, Course Delivery Manager; she learnt how to book people onto courses using the Kelvin TOP-SET course booking system and how to organise the shipments of course materials.
Day 3: Rebecca spent Wednesday completing important duties in the Courses department. She packed and sent course materials, booked people onto courses and used the FedEx website to register and monitor different shipments of course materials for Kelvin TOP-SET clients.
Day 4: This morning, Rebecca helped the Fire Wardens to test the fire alarm. She then spent the rest of the day in the Sales and Marketing department. Rebecca helped to complete Tutor Briefs and send emails to clients. She also took advantage of the opportunity to complete the e-RCA online e-learning course, write an article for the website and research and recommend promotional products for future exhibitions.
Day 5: On Friday, Rebecca helped Finance Manager, Irene McNeil with her workload – learning how to process purchase invoices, raise sales invoices and process payments. She also learnt about banking procedures, month end, quarter end, annual accounts procedures and USA accounts processes. Rebecca then finished her week by attending a debriefing session with Brian McConnell, CEO.
When asked about her week with Kelvin TOP-SET, Rebecca said:
“I have really enjoyed my work experience placement at Kelvin TOP-SET. I have learnt a lot of valuable skills that I will be able to use in whatever job I do in the future. It has also been great to see the different types of jobs available in a working office.”
