Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of women-only events raising money for research into all 200 types of cancer. On Saturday 17th May two intrepid members of the Kelvin TOP-SET team entered the Irvine event to raise money for this important cause. The weather was not particularly kind to them – a traditional Scottish cloud-filled sky greeted them at the start line along with a downpour to accompany the warm-up exercises. However, they strode off into the mud undeterred.

The Irvine route is within Eglinton Country Park, which covers an area of 400 acres, and the ladies passed from parkland path, to riverside walkway, woodland and forest, to loch shore before finally completing the 5K circuit with a smile still on their faces.

Commenting on the event, Kerry Wilson, Sales and Marketing Executive with Kelvin TOP-SET said “Signing up for a charity event in May, we thought it would be a sunny 5K round Eglinton Park in Irvine…how wrong we were! I was genuinely surprised by the number of ladies of all ages and abilities who turned up on the wet miserable morning supported by their children and families. Luckily the weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of all involved and the variety of compulsory pink, shiny costumes added some sparkle to the wet day.”

Liz Sharland, Course Administration Assistant with Kelvin TOP-SET added “We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us. Donations are still coming in. Our total at the last count was £135. Not bad for a walk in the park!” Speaking about future fundraising plans, Liz said “Having survived the 5k we are enthused and are preparing to sign up for next years Land o’ Burns Starlight walk in aid of the Ayrshire Hospice. At least on that walk it will be too dark to see the puddles and the mud!”
